Mount Elgon Hiking and Sipi Falls Safari - 8 Days

Our Mount Elgon & Sipi Falls safari takes you on an amazing climbing /hiking adventure to explore the surrealistic landscapes of an ancient volcano.

Situated in eastern Uganda and straddling the border with Kenya, Mount Elgon National Park is an extinct volcano that probably first erupted 20 million years ago. Mt. Elgon is the eighth highest mountain in Africa (the fourth highest in East Africa) and rises from the broadest base of any freestanding mountain in the world. It’s peaks form a jagged circle around the caldera, which at 8 km wide is also one of the largest in the world. The tallest peak, Wagagai (4,321 m) is situated on the Ugandan side of the border, whereas other major peaks surrounding the caldera are Kiongo (4,303 m), Mubiyi (4,210 m) and Jackson’s Summit (4,160 m).

Mt. Elgon and the various peaks surrounding the caldera of the extinct volcano are not a difficult mountain to conquer, aspirant hikers need to be reasonably fit but require no specialised equipment or skill level to reach any of the major peaks. Two of the more popular 3 to 7 day trails taking visitors to the Wagagai peak are the Sasa Trail out of Budadiri and the Piswa Trail out of Kapkwata.

This itinerary is based on the understanding that the climb of the highest peak Wagagai can be completed in 3 days. How much time you may actually need depends on your fitness, the route chosen for the summit and excursions to nearby attractions along the route, such as cave complex, hot springs, water falls, the crater floor as well as other summit climbs around the caldera: Your options are as follows:

The Sasa Trail is the most easily accessible from Mbale and is the most direct route to the peaks. It also passes through the park’s largest area of bamboo forest. However it is also a steep and demanding climb of over 1,600 metres on the first day. 5 days are recommended if you include all excursions. 3 days if you only aim for the Wagagai summit.

The Piswa Trail is one other route commonly used from the Uganda side and from the north and from Kapkwata. It is longer and less steep than the Sasa River Route with a more gentle climb of 660 metres on the first day 6 to 7 days are recommended for this trail if you include excursions.

The Sipi Trail is a comparatively new trail starting from Sipi Falls. It offers the spectacular Tatum Cave hidden within an extensive forest. This route also includes an excursion option to the Chebonet Falls. 6 to 7 days are recommended for this trail if you include all possible excursions.
