Transport Minister Andrew Constance said the new “one stop” airport would be “very good for travellers” and would help to reduce congestion at the busy Sydney airport.
The new airport, which will be built on the site of a former military airfield, will be located near the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
“This airport will bring thousands of people into the city every day,” Mr Constance told ABC Radio Sydney.
Mr Constance, who was speaking as the state government announced the opening of the state’s first one stop airport, said it would provide more direct flights from Sydney to regional areas of Queensland and the Gold Coast.
“We want to see people get out of the city,” he said.
He said the airport would offer better access to destinations, as well as easier access to flights from regional areas such as Adelaide, Perth, Newcastle and Brisbane.
Transport Minister Andrew Stokes says the new one stop terminal will reduce congestion on Sydney’s CBD airport.
